Statues are a band from Sudbury, Ontario. Their bio claims Joe Jackson, The Clash and Buzzcocks as influences. Various press also throw in comparisons to Ted Leo. Their debut album, Aux., was released by Pelado Records.
The late 70's punk and power pop influences are definitely in evidence and the band is pretty successful at crafting catchy songs with a nice edge to them. But I think they kind of fall victim to the concept of "too much of a good thing." About halfway through the record, the hooks and big choruses are still there but it all starts to blend together into a sort of pleasant, but forgettable batch of songs. A few of the songs also seem to go on a little too long and lose their sharpness in the process. The band does throw in a Flock of Seagulls cover ("Telecommunication") near the end to vary things up a bit. Overall, it's a decent effort and a good find for $2.
Head to the download page to hear "Fine Tuned" and "Picket" from Aux.
Also, check out the media section on the band's website for streams of a few other tracks from the album and a new song called "Shipping News."

RE: Statues
I like "Fine Tuned", but not "Picket" so much. The band has a laid back feel, but, like you say, maybe a bit *too* laid back; like they're bored with what they're doing, and they don't care that it shows.Quack Corleone

lyrically
they have a little something going on but that drummer should be shot. Bump bump, budda budda, bump bump - that's all he plays over and over and over and over again. Give me his address and I will go talk to him about making the band more three dimensional. I guess I am being a bit overly picky because they are a decent band but they could be something close to good if they addressed their monotony issues. I'm sure my brother would be mad because everything is in C but I'm not like that.
